Orkut Vs Facebook
You guys wont believe this: I have a hard time convincing some of my friends that facebook is having more users than orkut !!!
Why is there a confusion? It is because in India orkut is more popular than facebook. So they think that facebook is just a clone of orkut and it is less popular.
So I show them this statistics:
Facebook traffic is shown in red color(*). Orkut traffic is shown in blue (If you can find it at the bottom).
Orkut traffic reduced by 7.7% last year while faceook traffic increased by 69.5%.
So that is about popularity. The next time you have to explain this to anyone, it is better to show them this graph.

I am shocked..Actually I thought orkut is used by many ppl.
I have logged into facebook only once and I found it a bit complex than orkut.But this graph is telling me to try it again..
So is the case of gaming consoles. In India, PlayStation is pretty popular. But if you check the statics Nitendo Wii comes first, X-Box second and then comes the SONY’s console. Unbelievable?
I was shocked when I heard that Facebook had a page hit which was once way over our own Google!!! This new news is not so shocking when compared to that…

This proves another fact: Internet is in many aspects like any other market. It is location aware. You target one audience, you get that audience.
It is not like there is a facebook and everybody will start using that. Facebook did not do any marketing in India, and orkut took the market share.
In essense, even though every website is equally accessible from all parts of the world, your marketing strategy is very important in determinig the demography of your users.

Orkut is like..simple, plain and usable….for now at least.
Orkut was not only popular in India.”Orkut is the most visited website in Brazil and second most visited site in India”(Wikipedia). The reason i think for orkut boom was “There was a time Google made use of AJAX and made it’s site attractive”. At that time only and only with “Google and it’s networks” and orkut(came up as a side dish) became popular. If You look at the list of Social Networking Sites in Wikipedia say 127+ sites are there. So the real competition is not between “Orkut and FaceBook”. and i don’t think i can create account in all the sites and compare.
. I think the purpose is what kind of social networking. For example for a biz guy LinkedIn is good.
And I guess facebook was the first to start isn’t it?
Wikipedia says orkut was launched on 22 January 2004 and facebook on February 2004. Pretty close though.
facebook is way to advance than orkut. facebook look is complete and orkut is #$$#$!@ (another incomplete product of google). looks like at google no body pays attention to make things better (yes there is one exception google search)

but i am not using it and i have open an account in face book,
many of my friends turned form Orkut to Facebook
cause they just cannot access the orkut
in some countries like UAE orkut is band this is main reason to change orkut to face book.

There was a time i used to get many scraps a day on orkut and now i get a scrap on very rare basis. First time when u get into facebook it seems quite complex but with the passage of time you get used to its features and functions and then you get addicted to facebook!
Well, Orkut only had won the market in some countries like brazil, india & pakistan however Facebook is the world’s third most visited website while orkut 130th! so no comparison..
I as a software developer can advice facebook is wayy wayyyy wayy more complex and stable than orkut.

Facebook is better than orkut but moving to facebook means leavng all ur scraps/ photos etc etc of orkut, its like changing a club… bt what about the guys with whom you did clubbing… nw if they dont move on with to the nu club u wont like it na… I am a avid orkut user, also came up with a facebook account, at the same many of my friends too…. but after the initial wow facebook feeling, the comment, quizzzes etc we found out orkut was simpler… u know in orkut we get things at one place. What happend in the end that nw I log in to facebook, bt not as alternative to orkut bt to play and compare games – like mafia, farmville etc, quizes which soon became old.
Nah… social netwrking sucks on the whole… just call ur frenz

As far as these 2 are concerned , orkut is way better than facebook. Facebook has lots of AJAX which makes it irritating to me.
By the way , i also tried the new orkut which is very much similar to facebook , and i didn’t like it.
Twitter is fine, but i don’t find anything great about twitter.. you can say , its ONE SYSTEM which most of the social networking sites have..

Comparison of Facebook and Orkut
Here I am discussing about two popular social networking sites. Facebook and Orkut. In past few days we are watching some significant changes in both the sites. But still, Facebook is running far ahead from Orkut. So what makes Facebook world’s number 2 site (Alexa Rank) and why having a lots of changes Orkut is not competing with Facebook. Here are the things-
Social Networking
Well, social networking is more easy in Facebook rather then Orkut. I don’t understand the reason behind that Orkut does not allow to crawl the profile pages of its users by search engines. If you have to find someone you just type his/her name on google, it will show you their profile pages from Facebook or even linkedin,twitter too. But not from Orkut WHY?
If you have to promote your product, brand or company , Facebook allows you to create pages that are known as Facebook pages. They are truly professional pages and can be used for brand promotion. I don’t see such a feature in Orkut. So marketing professionals and brand promoters are not considering Orkut as platform. It makes Orkut away from Social Media world.
Developer’s View
Facebook has a good development kit that allows third party developers to access Facebook. Facebook API is very strong and easy to access. Facebook comment, Facebook streaming, Facebook widget, Facebook profile, Facebook connect, Facebook share are very popular tools that are used by the developers to access facebook from their application or website. Orkut is lacking in this point. They have come with Orkut share, similar to Facebook share. But still they have to cover a long journey to beat Facebook.
Sharing With Other Sites/Twitter
Facebook can be integrated with other social platforms and vice versa. For example you can send your tweets to Facebook directly and you can update your twitter status via Facebook (pages) too. Twitter is a rapidly growing site and the integration of Facebook and twitter is a good step for both the sites.
GUI
In terms of GUI the new Orkut is competing with Facebook somehow. Facebook did a beautiful use of Ajax to make their site more interactive and smooth. Orkut is doing the same with new Orkut.
Actually now a days nothin works on orkut. I mean its features sucks, although they have introduced new ones but still they dont work properly. for eg:
1)There is an option to include graphics in profile but then link is removed by orkut team thinkin it as a spam, well its ok for this reason then
2)Option for graphical testimonial doesnt work > sayin testimonial too large
3)The only option which is used by the orkut user most of the time is scrap, here also you can send only limites scraps per day, what if the user have 900 or so friends?
4)If you are new to orkut, or you made a new account and you find your circle there, there is no way you can send requests to all your friends and that really sucks, a social networking site incapable of addin friends?
On the other hand everything on facebook works properly wheather it is a chat or sending messages or any other thing everything is smooth and clear
Orkut is just popular in Brazil and India.
Whereas Facebook is pretty popular in most parts of the western world and the rest of the world.
Since I am in the US, its very popular among high school and college students.
It has become some thing that is part of life such as your cell phone or GPS.

Well the old user interface of orkut was more better than the new orkut user interface and the facebook. In orkut you can see your frnds from your home page no need to go for your profile like facebook. You can not stay invisible while you chat with others in facebook. The first time user who login to facebook go blank because of the clumsy user interface. The only reason facebook is more popular is, it started a good marketing before orkut and it is not meant for social networking, it just made itself a good time pass site where people who have lots of time play games and do those kick/ping/pong/ding/dong so that a big amount of time can be pass doing the same thing in different different way. Its too much complex. I had Orkut account first then I went for facebook. Now I just open the facebook account to check whther somebody send me a message. I wish Orkut had started the marketing before Facebook then I would not have to use the facebook account.
In Europe we don’t use orkut, we use facebook.
I don’t care in which country they use which site. I just know that Orkut was popular in India, my all friends are joined to me via Orkut. I have lots of scraps, testamonials & added 800 photos on Orkut.
& now just because everyone is migrating to facebook, I’ve leave all my stuff behind.
Orkut’s scrapbook is lot much better than Facebook’s wall because it shows too much junk like somebody poked somebody, somebody became friend of somebody. It should just display messages.
I didn’t easily found way to personalize my profile in facebook, like I did in Orkut. I loved %trusty %cool %sexy stats on my page.
Facebook is just for stupid games, there’s no more social networking. There’s only privacy that’s left behind. Those companies manipulate market with brainstorming.

I would probably like Orkut, but since no one I know of uses it, I use Facebook. I’ve actually never tried Orkut.
