There’s a whole “branch of mathematics that studies the conditions under which order *must* appear” called [Ramsey Theory](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramsey_theory). I don’t know much about it, but it is pretty cool.

I believe the term ‘pigeonhole’ originates from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dovecote. In day-to-day usage, a pigeonhole normally refers to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigeonhole_messagebox.
